A compact backyard renovation

Creating A Space For Everyone.

This Hamilton, Ontario backyard was redesigned in two phases to create a family-oriented space with multiple amenities while making the most of a compact lot. The goal was to transform an underused yard into a setting that balances recreation, entertaining, and seasonal beauty.

The angled layout of the home and yard created challenges that were resolved with a subtly angled service deck and smart drainage solutions. These adjustments not only solved structural issues but also gave the family a stable, low-maintenance foundation for enjoying the gardens as they matured, turning limitations into long-term strengths.

Challenges

“One major challenge of the design and execution was the angle of the home, in relation to the property lines. It created challenges during construction, to find a point to square off of, and was solved creatively during the design phase by having the service deck be slightly angled into the backyard.”

Building the vision

Completed In Two Phases.

The centrepiece of this yard is the masonry kitchen, fireplace, and bench. On the side, a shed anchors the entrance to the backyard. A sports court is tucked into the corner of the property. The gardens were designed to provide privacy as well as be a constant show of colour throughout the season. There were existing conifers that provided privacy, but their location in the middle of the yard necessitated their removal.

The second phase of the project was to install the screened pergola to provide shade to the patio. This was delayed to allow the client to experience the backyard with the new amenities before deciding how a covered area would be most effective. The primary purpose of the screens was to provide sun protection in the late afternoon, but in the cooler months, it also serves to keep heat from the fireplace in.
